Hamilton Tonneau Plain (1927)

A classic early Hamilton with two tone dial and impeccable art deco styling.

Wonderful example of a classic early Hamilton. The tonneau shaped model was part of a series of geometric releases produced in the late 1920s. The model came in several varieties, this one is known as the “plain tonneau” due to the bezel being clean — without engraving.

For watches of the time, this was quite large. It still fits nicely on the wrist and the works well as a modern man’s watch — unlike many wrist watches from the pre-War period. The case is 10K white gold filled. This is a Wadsworth case created specifically for Hamilton. While the bezel is without adornment, the sides of the case are engraved and enameled. It is understated and elegant. The case of this particular example is in excellent condition, with no brassing or wear through.

The dial is original and untouched. It is subtley two-toned, with an ivory numbers track and a pale gray center area. The subseconds and the numeral styling is classic art deco. At one time the numerals and the hands were lumed, but this has faded over time. The dial is in excellent condition with only a slight patina and no unsightly spotting. The hands are original and have lost a bit of their lume. We left it as found.

This watch has one of Hamilton’s great movements — the 17 jewel 987F. It’s a reliable and accurate movement and should give years of good service. The watch is running strong and keeping good time.

For the band of this watch, we added a new Italian calf leather band that really sets off the dial.

The service history of this watch is unknown and it has not been serviced while in our possession. While the watch is keeping very good time right now, you will probably want to have a jeweler clean, oil, and adjust the watch to get the greatest accuracy and the longest enjoyment from your vintage watch.
