Lord Elgin Curved (1938)

Uncommon Elgin curved back wrist watch with new old stock Elgin band.

This is a relatively uncommon late 1930s Lord Elgin. The case is quite small and the case back is gently curved, making this one of the few curved case models produced by Elgin. When you combine the curved case with the small size of the watch, you have to assume this was an experiment in creating a drivers watch without the flexible lugs (this watch does not have flexible lugs). It’s hard to say what was intended, there is little information on this particular model.

In all other respects, this is a typical Lord Elgin, with a 14K yellow gold filled case and a high quality 21 jewel movement. The case on this model was made by S&W. This example is in Very Good shape with only minor scratching and no brassing or wear through. The dial on this watch has some spotting and a bit of a patina from age. We’ve intentionally left the dial and hands in “as found” condition. The crystal is in Very Good shape with no cracks or chips.

This watch has one of Elgin’s early 21 jewel wrist watch movements, the grade 531. The watch is currently running well and keeping good time.

We’ve added to this watch a period appropriate new old stock Elgin pigskin band. Due to its small size, this watch can easily be worn by a woman.

Note that this watch has not been serviced while in our possession and we do not know the service history of this piece. While it is running well and keeping good time now we do advise all vintage watch owners to have their watches regularly serviced to assure the longest enjoyment.
