This is a Gruen model 435-490, known as the “Huntsman”. This model was first introduced in 1941 and produced for only a short period of time. The unique ribbon-shaped lugs made this model one of the most visually distinctive watches from the period. Advertisements show this watch selling for $45 in 1941 — that’s about $700 in current dollar prices!
Few of these watches have survived in Excellent shape. The ribbon lugs tend to wear quite badly and most examples of this watch show a lot of wear. This particular watch, however, is in Excellent shape. Aside from some minor spotting on the dial, the watch is in exceptional condition.
The watch has a 10K yellow gold filled bezel. The case back is sterling silver (note that most of these models had stainless steel backs, making this particular watch rather uncommon). There is no brassing or wear through on the case. The case measures approximately 35mm long including the bold lugs and approximately 23mm wide excluding the winder.
The watch has Gruen’s 435 movement; a 17 jewel movement. We had this watch cleaned, oiled and adjusted in November of 2013 and it is currently running strong and keeping good time.
Note that this watch case is small by contemporary watch standards and as a result it can be worn by either a man or a woman.
We’ve added to this watch a very nice new Handley-Roma water resistant croco-grain leather watch band. This watch is ready to wear.
