This is a Gruen Curvex 440-450, a model commonly known as “Trooper.” This streamlined, Art Deco beauty is in excellent condition inside and out. Like all true Curvex watches, it features a nice curve to its case and Gruen’s innovative curved movement. The “Trooper” was introduced by Gruen in 1940 and continued to be made until about 1946. It is one of the few Gruen models offered in both gold fill and solid gold that had the same name. This particular example is gold filled (not solid gold).

This triple-signed Curvex measures 37mm lug tip to lug tip and 22.5mm in width (not including the signed Gruen crown). Powering this watch is its original 440 caliber Curvex Precision mechanism, a 17 jewel movement. This movement has been fully serviced and has a new mainspring. It is running well and keeping good time.

The ivory color, matte finished dial is in Very Good unrestored condition. It features a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold numbers, original gold hands and a tonneau-shaped sub-seconds dial with 60 second checkered outer chapter, recessed center and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. There is some darkening inside several of the numerals on the dial, but aside from this minor flaw there are no issues with the dial or hands.

The domed and curved acrylic crystal is new old stock and is unscratched and without distortion. The sleek and streamlined Wadsworth case is 10K yellow gold filled and in Excellent condition, with no signs of brassing or wear through. The case back is signed Gruen Watch Company. The back is un-engraved.

This beautiful vintage Curvex has been cleaned, oiled & regulated so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. It comes fitted with a new lizard leather Hadley Roma band with  matching color clasp. The watch is ready to wear.
