A hard to find hidden lug watch in excellent, all-original condition.
A hard to find hidden lug watch in excellent, all-original condition.
The model 5740 was one of the more distinctive Elgin case designs from the early 1950s. Good examples of this watch are very hard to find as the dramatic lugs tended to wear with use. This particular watch is in Excellent condition and is all original.
The case is signed Elgin but was manufactured by the Star Watch Case Company. The case is 10K yellow gold filled, both bezel and back. It is in Excellent condition with no brassing or signs of wear through. The case back fits snugly.
The dial is in Very Good condition with a barely noticeably patina. The gold applied numerals and stick hour markers are in Excellent condition. The sword hands are in Excellent condition with no oxidation.
The movement for this watch is the 8/0s size 681 caliber movement. That’s the same base used for the 21 jewel 680 movement, but in a 19 jewel configuration. This watch runs well and keeps good time, with a strong reserve.
We’ve added to this watch a very nice new Hadley-Roma leather band. It is ready to wear.
Note that this watch has not been serviced while in our possession and we do not know the service history of this piece. While it is running well and keeping good time now we do advise all vintage watch owners to have their watches regularly serviced to assure the longest enjoyment.
