It’s rare to find a 1930s deco period watch in this condition. This is an all original 1935 Elgin with a 10K gold filled deco style stepped case with engraved sides. With a two tone dial, applied gold numbers and ornate hands, this is truly a work of mechanical art. This watch is in excellent condition.
The bezel and back are both 10K yellow gold filled and show no evidence of brassing or wear through. The Elgin Star dial (“timed by the stars”) is in Excellent condition and free from any serious marks — there are some very small spots at the edge of the minute track near the 11 (seen in the first photo). The gold hands and gold applied numbers are without rust. The plastic crystal is a replacement and is unscratched. The watch is powered by a 15 jewel calibre 519 movement. It runs well and keeps good time.
We’ve paired this watch with a period appropriate pig skin band. The band is new and is medium-sized (regular). The watch is ready to wear. The watch case measures 25.4 mm by 27.8 mm, not counting the stem and the lugs.
We don’t know the service history of this watch and it has not been serviced while in our possession. While the watch is keeping very good time right now, you will probably want to have a jeweler clean, oil, and adjust the watch to get the greatest accuracy and the longest enjoyment from your vintage watch.
